We Tested 60 AI Search Answers. Visibility Was the Easy Part

A bounded review of 60 AI-generated search answers shows why mentions, citations, visits and commercial outcomes must be measured separately.

AI search visibility is easy to overstate because a brand mention feels like a result. It is not. A mention is an observation inside one generated answer. It does not prove that the source influenced a buying decision, created a qualified visit or produced revenue.

We reviewed 60 AI-generated search answers to examine what the systems returned, which sources they used and how consistently brands appeared. The work was a bounded test, not a universal ranking study. It showed why companies need to separate four different questions.

1. Was the brand mentioned?

A mention establishes that the model produced the name in that answer. It may reflect training data, retrieved sources, prompt wording, geography, language or a mixture of those factors. Repeating the prompt can produce a different answer. A single appearance therefore says little about dependable visibility.

2. Was the brand cited?

A citation is stronger evidence because it identifies a source the system presented alongside its answer. It still does not prove that the source caused the wording or that the user opened it. Citation, visit and commercial contribution remain separate events.

This distinction is routinely lost in AI visibility reporting. A dashboard can count citations accurately while still leaving the commercial question unanswered.

3. Did the answer represent the business accurately?

Visibility can be harmful when the description is outdated, vague or attached to the wrong market. The practical work is not simply to increase the number of appearances. It is to make the business easier to identify and describe accurately through clear service pages, consistent entity information, technically accessible content and evidence that survives scrutiny.

None of those measures guarantees inclusion. They improve the source material available to search engines and retrieval systems.

4. Did anything commercially useful happen?

The useful measurement chain is longer:

AI answer observed
Brand mentioned or cited
Source visited
Qualified behaviour on the site
Enquiry or transaction
Revenue and margin

Most current tools can observe only the first part of that chain. Some can detect referral traffic. Very few companies can connect AI-mediated discovery to a defensible net commercial outcome, particularly when the journey crosses devices, channels or later brand searches.

That does not make the work worthless. It means the claim must match the evidence.

What leaders should ask

Before buying an AI visibility programme, ask:

• Which models, markets, languages and prompts are being tested?
• How often are prompts repeated?
• Are mentions separated from citations?
• Are cited sources inspected rather than merely counted?
• Can the provider distinguish visibility from traffic, enquiries and revenue?
• What evidence would cause the recommendation to change?

A precise percentage without the prompt set, collection period and method is not decision-grade evidence.

The operating issue behind the metric

AI search creates a familiar management problem. A new metric arrives, teams build activity around it, and reporting becomes confident before the commercial meaning is settled. That is how organisations end up optimising the measure rather than the decision.

The better route is controlled observation. Establish a repeatable prompt set, record the answers, inspect the sources, correct material inaccuracies and compare changes over time. Keep the limitations visible. Then connect the work to customer behaviour where the evidence allows it.

This is consistent with how letsrocc approaches wider marketing diagnosis. We test the evidence, ownership and commercial consequence before recommending more activity.
